In our fast-paced, modern world, gathering in circle has become a cherished escape for many women. These circles were a pivotal piece of my healing journey and often the only place I felt truly seen, heard, held and LOVED. I often get people look at me strangely when I say I facilitate these spaces. I feel like there are all sorts of preconceived notions about what women's circles are, so I thought I would do a little introduction for those who are curious about what they might experience.
What Are Women’s Circles?
A women’s circle is a sacred gathering where women come together to share, support, and connect with one another. These circles can be formal or informal, held in various settings from living rooms to outdoor spaces, community centers to yoga studios. The essence of a women’s circle lies in its intention: to create a safe, nurturing environment where women can express themselves freely, listen deeply, and be witnessed without judgment.
The Ritual of Sitting in Circle
Sitting in a circle is a symbolic act that represents equality, unity, and inclusivity. Unlike hierarchical structures, a circle has no beginning or end, no leader or follower. This formation encourages each participant to feel seen and heard, fostering a sense of belonging and mutual respect.
Why Do Women Sit in Circle?
1. Connection and Community
In an era where digital interactions often overshadow face-to-face connections, women’s circles offer a space for genuine human interaction. Sitting in circle allows women to share their stories, experiences, and wisdom, building a sense of community and sisterhood. This connection helps to combat feelings of isolation and loneliness, reminding women that they are not alone on their journey.
Traditionally, tribal Women would all bleed together on the dark moon (New Moon) and they would all gather at this time in what was called the 'Red Tent'. These were potent times of initiation and sharing of wisdom while the men would be out hunting.
2. Healing and Support
Women’s circles provide a nurturing environment for healing. Whether it’s emotional wounds, past traumas, or everyday stresses, the circle offers a safe space for women to release and process their feelings. Not always by sharing but often, simply by being in the presence of other Women. The collective energy of the circle amplifies the healing process, as each woman’s presence and support contribute to the overall sense of well-being.
3. Empowerment and Self-Discovery
By participating in women’s circles, women are encouraged to explore and embrace their authentic selves. The act of sharing personal stories and listening to others fosters self-awareness and self-acceptance. This journey of self-discovery often leads to greater awareness, confidence, empowerment, and a deeper understanding of one’s purpose and potential.
4. Ritual and Sacred Space
Women’s circles often incorporate various rituals and practices that help to open and hold a sacred space. These can include meditation, breathwork, cacao, visualization, drumming, chanting, or the use of elements like candles, crystals, and essential oils. These rituals help to ground and center participants, facilitating a deeper connection to themselves, each other, and the greater whole.
5. Celebration and Gratitude
Circles are also a space for celebration and gratitude. Women come together to honor milestones, achievements, and the cycles of life. Whether it’s celebrating a new beginning, a personal accomplishment, or simply the act of coming together, the circle becomes a container for joy, appreciation, and expansion of our light.
The Transformative Power of Women’s Circles
The impact of women’s circles extends far beyond the time spent together. The connections made, the healing experienced, and the empowerment gained often ripple out into other areas of our lives. Many women find that participating in circles enhances their relationships, boosts their creativity, and provides a deeper sense of fulfillment and purpose.
In a world that often pulls us in many directions, women’s circles offer a moment of stillness, a chance to reconnect with ourselves and each other. They remind us of our shared humanity, our collective strength, and the beauty of coming together as women. So, take a seat in the circle Sister, and let the journey of connection and transformation begin.
