In the hustle and bustle of our everyday life, it's easy to overlook the subtle signs that we're pushing ourselves too hard. Burnout doesn't always hit like a lightning bolt; often, it creeps in quietly, weaving itself into our daily routines. As someone who has navigated multiple burnouts, without knowing what they were, I can tell you that catching yourself early could literally save you years of recovery.
Here are five signs that you might be on your way to burning out and some gentle reminders to take care of yourself.
1. Tired or on your way to burnout?
If you find yourself waking up more exhausted than when you went to bed, it could be a sign of burnout. This isn't just feeling tired after a long day—it's a bone deep exhaustion that sleep doesn't seem to touch. Your body is trying to tell you that it's overwhelmed and needs rest.
Tip: Honour your need for rest. Try creating a bedtime ritual that soothes your mind and body. Consider incorporating calming activities like reading, gentle stretching, or listening to soothing music before sleep and reducing screen time for at least 2 hours before bed.
2. Decreased Motivation
Remember when you were passionate about your work, hobbies, or daily activities? If that spark has dimmed and you find it hard to muster enthusiasm for tasks you once enjoyed, burnout could be at play. This lack of motivation is a common sign that your mental and emotional reserves are running low.
Tip: Reconnect with activities that bring you joy, even if it’s in small doses. It’s okay to step back and rediscover what lights you up.
3. Irritability and Mood Swings
When you’re burning out, it’s easy to become irritable or emotionally reactive. Little things that wouldn't normally bother you might trigger frustration or sadness. These mood swings are a sign that your emotional well-being needs attention.
Tip: Practice self-compassion and mindfulness. Give yourself permission to feel your emotions without judgement and explore healthy outlets like journaling or talking to a trusted friend.
4. Increased Social Anxiety
Burnout can make social interactions feel completely overwhelming. If you notice yourself feeling more anxious about social situations, avoiding gatherings, or feeling drained after socializing, it might be a sign that your stress levels are too high. This increased social anxiety can be a way your mind and body are telling you to slow down.
Tip: Set boundaries and allow yourself to say no to social engagements that feel too draining. Engage in activities that feel safe and nourishing, and don't hesitate to seek support from loved ones or professionals if you need to. Often just being heard with where we’re at can be a huge relief.
5. Physical Symptoms of burnout
Burnout doesn’t just affect your mind and emotions—it manifests physically, too. Frequent headaches, stomach issues, muscle tension, and lowered immunity can all be indicators that your body is under too much stress.
Tip: Listen to your body’s needs. Incorporate relaxation techniques like deep breathing, yoga, or nature walks into your routine to help alleviate physical symptoms.
Nurturing Yourself Back to Balance
Recognizing the signs of burnout is the first step towards healing. Remember, self-care isn’t a luxury—it’s a necessity, especially in today’s fast paced world. Create space in your life for rest and relaxation, and reach out for support when you need it. You are worthy of the time and care it takes to feel whole and balanced again.
